England's Assistant Coach Reveals The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Today, his attention is fixed supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from player to coach began with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his destiny.
Rapid Rise
Barry's progression is incredible. Beginning with his first major job, he established a standing for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career led him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to have the best chance.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”
Greedy Coaches
The assistant coach says along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he declares. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and innovate. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to know-how to performance.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with them. We have to spend time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects from the top division,” he comments. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared these days. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play across those 24 metres.”
Thirst for Improvement
The coach's thirst for development knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, as his cohort included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings available to him to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
Barry graduated as the best in his year, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.
Lampard’s successor with the club became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
