Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Charges of Misleading US Legislators
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.
The former director's attorney filed the response on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would attempt to have the proceedings thrown out for various factors including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his attorney general to take action against him.
Court Developments
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they planned to file various legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to take over the legal matter.
The former director's case was initially overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.
Courtroom Atmosphere
James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the magistrate recite his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he comprehended the allegations.
"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.
Previous Events
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as president. At the time, he was overseeing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, James Comey triggered a backlash from Democrats when he stated just days before the national vote that he was examining presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.
Current Allegations
Government attorneys assert Mr Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the upper house by stating he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations data about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.
Personal Comments
Through a recording the former director posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".
"My family and I have known for a long time that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
These allegations against the former director emerged after Trump shared on social media insisting on his attorney general, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and others.
