The athlete recorded her fastest time of 1:54.61 the previous season in London.

Keely Hodgkinson concluded her 800m season with a win at the all-female Athlos meet in New York on Friday evening.

{The current Olympic gold medallist, who secured bronze at the global championships last month, excelled in an outstanding win in 1:56.53 in what was just her sixth appearance in a season impacted by a muscle issue.

Fellow Briton and global silver winner Georgia Hunter Bell finished second once more in 1:58.33, while St Vincent's Shafiqua Maloney (one minute 58.57) secured third place.

"I haven't competed much this year so it was probably easier for me to go out there and be motivated to perform," said Hodgkinson.

"The atmosphere out there is incredible so it was really, really fun."

The female-exclusive event packed Icahn Stadium in its second year, introducing a festive vibe to conventional athletics, with live music and special crowns substituting standard medals.

The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena Williams, who is married to the founder of Athlos Alexis O., was on hand to present the victors with their tiaras.

Last year's winners took home $60,000 (£44,603) - among the biggest cash prizes in athletics.

The event also attracted some of the sport's biggest names, as Kenya's triple Olympic champion and global record breaker Faith K. triumphed in the mile race, finishing in four hours 17.78 minutes.

The US Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the 100m and 200m double.
