Premier League Updates: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; Guardiola Says 'Defence Must Get Better'
From the world of Premier League developments, a significant player has been given a substantial ban, a manager has pointed out a defender's errors to prove an argument, and Pep Guardiola has demanded defensive betterment after a chaotic victory.
Mejbri Given Four-Game Ban and Fine
The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game suspension and a £15,000 penalty for improper behaviour in October's fixture against Leeds United. The Football Association said Mejbri was referred an independent disciplinary panel after an incident of spitting towards visiting supporters around the 67-minute point during a 2-0 win for Burnley.
A statement read: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions during the top-flight match with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player behaved in breach of the laws of the game or in a poor manner and/or using abusive and indecent behaviour by spitting towards the direction of Leeds United fans.”
The statement added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-game ban and £15,000 after a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction will be published at a later date.” The team, now 19th in the table, visit 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
2. Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Make a Point
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that not having seasoned players is no a problem at club, highlighting how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop the 28-year-old from having poorly in the loss against Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the youngest squad in the division, does not feel that inexperience played a part in their poor result. He presented his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's oldest player on the pitch, after he delivered an error-strewn performance at the back.
“We always talk about a lack of experience when we fail to win,” the coach said. “After we defeated Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was talking about experienced players. I understand that when we lose, people are constantly searching for an explanation, but I think the reason why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to the experience, it’s because we were not at our best.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the most senior player for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not good enough.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'
Pep Guardiola has insisted his team have learnt from their recent thriller against Fulham and the episode is now in the past. City survived to claim a 5-4 victory in a remarkable encounter on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with about an hour gone.
Coming after they resisted a Leeds fightback to win 3-2 in their prior fixture, prompting more questions about if City possess the defensive steel required to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Good lessons, I hope. In the Premier League, for every team, one must take onboard what happens in the good things and bad things and think of what's next.”
“Of course I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse what happened, so as not to concede so many goals. With the three goals by Leeds, and five against Fulham you can see our sides, right? Therefore, always we have done plenty of good things. But the number of shots on target had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. And attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded is too high. We must improve.”
4. Newcastle Prioritise New Defenders' Contracts
Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal discussions involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal extending until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
This allows Wilson to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, the club's efforts are being treated with a certain urgency.
“My first few days after starting was when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was much more secure than the one I had thought,” said Wilson. “But it’s well known that the club wishes to extend Tino’s deal and we wants to extend Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are ongoing.”
Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the match with Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to be out for at least another week.
5. Nuno Says Paquetá Returns for West Ham
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for they face Brighton this Sunday, after serving a ban for the red card against Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” Nuno said. “I am positive it will not happen again as he himself admitted the error. We spoke about it in the dressing room. I am positive the matter is closed and it will not happen again.”
Nuno also understands the significant pressure facing his team, currently in the relegation zone before the weekend matches. “We can't avoid it,” he admitted. “It's a reality. We must face it. We're fighting for survival. We can't hide it.”
6. Arteta Impressed by No 9 Deputy Merino
The Spanish midfielder may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite their regular strikers return from injury. Merino has been playing as an emergency No 9 due to fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored the first goal against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second in a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
