Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team
The English team has chosen a 12-man selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
