The Chainsaw Man Film Tops the U.S. Cinema Earnings in First Weekend
Has Sony repeated their success? Following the success of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million threshold internationally, hitting a global total of $108 million during its debut. This movie beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Impressive American and Global Performance
Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2M in North America after a powerful $5.2M Saturday and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday performance. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced film earned nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M international, $18.2M domestic). Official totals are still pending from Sony its final earnings figure.
Comparisons to Other Blockbuster Anime Movies
Promotional firm a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, contrasting the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34 million in the North America in 2022 and started with a nearly identical $18 million in the U.S.. This movie's opening frame matches that benchmark, while its $108 million global gross presently stands slightly below the earlier film's $166.6 million final run. While it is improbable this Chainsaw Man film will match the earnings seen by smash success Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the studio.
Promotional Efforts Boost Box Office Dominance
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to drive their supremacy at the cinema for anime films. The Reze Arc promotional efforts began at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in July with a MAPPA panel, unique experiences, and photo opportunities with Pochita, then continued with a major presence at NYCC featuring behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an special preview for fans for the public and content creators as well after the final day of the convention.
What’s Next
2025 stands as a significant period for animated films, and for the studio, which has another animated movie releasing in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
