The Gunners' Debated Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its contentious sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June of next year.

Background and Scrutiny

The arrangement, reportedly valued at around £10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since come under fire.

This criticism stems from the country's reported backing for the M23 rebel group in continuing hostilities in the eastern part of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In February, Arsenal was accused of committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to address the sponsorship.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a state institution.

Many speculate that Arsenal committed to and continued this partnership primarily to expand their following across the continent.

Nonetheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and responsible tourism, motivating countless fans to visit the nation, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's ambition to become an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while implementing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “significant journey” and asserted it had been “advancing” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the campaign group Gunners Supporting Peace holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in the end of April.

Protesters displayed a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to cover up the Rwanda branding on uniforms.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

During that period, Paris Saint-Germain extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the identical duration that has led to the emblem appearing on the La Liga side's men's and women's shirts.
