The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Heated Discussions Regarding Bots, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a new playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes a few notable adjustments:
- Every squad includes only 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
- Actions done by real players award complete experience points, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
- Just a pair of locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Elements like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.
So essentially, the playlist delivers on its name: it offers a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think it's a good idea, since it gives additional choices for players looking for alternative methods to have fun with the game. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of Battlefield 6 players are mad.
Community Reactions: Anger to Praise
"People want real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," states a response to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and another details all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's very fun to practice, real players prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are players who have lives and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," states another. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," and another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Criticisms and Player Feedback
All that said, there are constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it will make wait times even longer for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was promised to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they tried to eliminate bot farms from the mode. Thus this new playlist seems like the community meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another labels this mode as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I had great enjoyment in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
If the development team has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, if their data shows this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
