During the bulk of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison built from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
