UK, UN and EU Condemn ‘Monumental Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Prison Term.

The court decision of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Human rights organizations and multiple governments have called the national security convictions politically motivated.

International Outcry and Demands for Freedom

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the lengthy imprisonment amounts to a de facto life term for the elderly man. She characterized the legal case as having political underpinnings under a law intended to muzzle critics of China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and release him to his family.

“This ruling illustrates how the ambiguous and wide-ranging provisions of Hong Kong’s security law may be enforced in violation of universal rights standards,” remarked top UN human rights official Volker Türk.

A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “condemns” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his swift liberation without preconditions.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was taken into custody four years ago the enactment of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities in the wake of months of pro-democracy protests which Lai and his newspaper supported.

He was ultimately convicted on charges including colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The collusion allegations were pursuant to the national security statute.

Personal Fears

Lai’s son, Sebastien, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. His international counsel described him the “world’s highest profile prisoner of conscience” behind bars at present.

Sebastien Lai commented that while the verdict was anticipated, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “respite” that the judicial farce had concluded.

Diplomatic Fallout

The verdict has complicated diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. British leader Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case during a meeting with China's leader Xi Jinping in January. However, visible progress on obtaining his liberty remains unclear.

Sebastien Lai asked the value of enhanced diplomatic ties announced recently, remarking it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Authorities' Statements

On the other hand, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the verdict showed that “law and order is maintained.”

The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in the nation's domestic matters.

A Representative Verdict

Press rights groups labeled Lai as a symbol of eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. Their director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who value a free press.”

With a near 100% conviction rate for national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is regarded as the strictest yet handed down under the security statute.
